acupuncture
Acupuncture is a single modality within a larger complete medical system called “Traditional Chinese Medicine.” Acupuncture introduces single use, filiform needles into specific acupuncture points, that lie along meridians into the skin, muscle and or fascia layers, in order to influence and balance the systems and subtle energy of the body, known as Qi. Needles can also be inserted within or around non-specific, tender or sore points in order to release sore or tight muscles, relieving pain. These points are known as Ashi points.
Herbal Therapy
Chinese Herbal Therapy consists of using specific Chinese herbs in combination resulting in precise formulas to treat very distinct disorders of the body. Chinese herbs and formulas can be administered in different forms. Pills, tablets, capsules, powders and dried whole herbs are the main forms. Desert Ridge Acupuncture utilizes pills, capsules and tablets for the ease of administration.
cupping
Cupping is another modality within “Traditional Chinese Medicine” and utilizes plastic and glass, round shaped “cups.” The cups are placed using suction with or without heat on areas of the body in order to stimulate the flow of Qi and Blood in order for the release of the superficial muscle layers. Cupping is mainly used on tight, sore, injured muscles, specifically of the back. Cupping has became recognized within mainstream media after professional and national Olympic athletes were photographed with cupping circular marks.
gua sha
Gua Sha is another therapy that that influences the Qi and Blood of the superficial muscles layers. Gua Sha uses a flat, smooth object or soup spoon to scrap the specific areas of the body. The scrapping produces a redness or bruising effect along the areas being scrapped. This therapy can used on the back or any area of the body for the purpose of releasing muscle tension, aches and pain, but is not used exclusively for muscle issues.
e-stim
Electro-Stimulation or E-Stim is a modality that utilizes running electrical current into the acupuncture needles by way of a specific E-Stim device. This device is connected to inserted needles by electrical leads and alligator clips. This adjustable device allows your acupuncturist to run precise electrical current into the needles, enhancing your treatment, stopping pain, relieving muscle tension and stimulating growth and repair.
diet/lifestyle
Your Acupuncturist or Doctor of Oriental Medicine has been trained in and may give very specific dietary or lifestyle recommendations for your precise disorder. Recommendations may include particular foods to be introduced or discontinued from your daily diet, along with other supplements or exercise based suggestions.
